    Car Sharing and Relocation Strategies: a Case Study Comparison in the Italian Market

    The sharing economy represents an economic model based on the sharing of goods and services. In particular, this paper examines car sharing model, an attractive alternative to a self-owned car which has found large interest in the recent literature in different research fields. This study aims to investigate innovative and effective relocation strategies based on the analysis of data on users’ consumptions, for the constantly growing car sharing system. For this purpose, after a literature review, the paper presents a case study focused on the car repositioning algorithm developed by one of the market leader in this sector: car2go. More in detail, the paper evaluates differences and similarities in the strategic management of this model within the Italian context, through a comparison among the cities of Rome and Milan. Empirical results and practical implications for users will be provided, by highlighting opportunities and threats concerning the different settings

    The impact of Digital Platforms on Business Models: an empirical investigation on innovative start-ups

    Digital platforms have the ability to connect people, organizations and resources with the aim of facilitating the core interactions between businesses and consumers as well as assuring a greater efficiency for the business management. New business concepts, such as innovative start-ups, are therefore created based on innovation, scalability and the relationships within the community around them. The purpose of this work is to deeply understand the evolution of business models brought by innovative and dynamic companies operating through online platforms. In order to achieve the objectives set, an exploratory multiple-case study was designed based on in-depth structured interviews. The aim was to conduct a mixed analysis, in order to rely both on qualitative and quantitative data. The structured interview protocol was therefore designed to collect and then analyse data concerning the company profile and managers’ perspectives on the phenomenon of interest. The interview protocol was submitted in advance and then face-to-face interviews were carried out with the following professional figures: Chief Executive Officer (CEO), General Manager, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Marketing Manager and Developers. Collected data were analysed and processed through the Canvas Business Model in order to clearly outline similarities and differences among the sample. Results can be considered under two viewpoints. On the one hand, this work provides a detailed overview of the companies interviewed, according to the dimensions of: reference market dynamics, type and number of customers, scalability. On the other one, they allow to identify some success patterns regarding key activities, key resources, channel mix strategy, costs management, value proposition, customer segmentation, key partners and the way to obtain revenues. Results from the multiple-case study with 15 Italian start-ups provide interesting insights by comparing the innovative business models developed and highlighting key differences and similarities. verall, the start-ups analyzed, operating in several sectors, showed great growth prospects and the possibility to create value for their customers through innovative products and services offered through digital platforms

    Sustainability of technological innovation investiments. Photovoltaic panels case study

    as photovoltaic panels. In the case study analysed are shown the benefits obtained from the investments of the central Italy after installing photovoltaic systems. The total expenditure for the electricity purchase is € 52.326, while the total benefit of the investment is € 18.789, equal in percentage to a 53% energy saving over a period of 20 years. The company expeniture in the absence of a photovoltaic system is equal to € 109.03, while in the presence of a plant, considering also all costs incurred for € 93.090, with a percentage of profit on the investment made equal to almost 15% in 20 years

    Fibroblast growth factor modulates mast cell recruitment in a murine model of prostate cancer

    Mast cells are important modifiers of prostate tumor microenvironment. The fibroblast growth factor/fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGF/FGFR) system plays a non-redundant autocrine/paracrine role in the growth, vascularization and progression of prostate tumors. Accordingly, the FGF antagonist long pentraxin-3 (PTX3) and the PTX3-derived small molecule FGF-trap NSC12 have been shown to inhibit the growth and vascularization of different FGF-dependent tumor types, including prostate cancer. In this study, we show that recombinant FGF2 is able to cause mast cell recruitment in vivo in the Matrigel plug assay. Conversely, PTX3 overexpression in transgenic mice or treatment with the FGF inhibitor NSC12 result in a significant inhibition of the growth and vascularization of TRAMP-C2 tumor grafts, a murine model of prostate cancer, that were paralleled by a decrease of mast cell infiltrate into the lesion. These data confirm and extend previous observations about the capacity of mast cells to respond chemotactically to FGF2 stimulation and provide evidence about a relationship among mast cell recruitment, angiogenesis, and tumor growth in human prostate adenocarcinom

    The digital revolution has greatly changed the approach to culture, work, leisure time, the way we interact and communicate with people: the digitization of information has taken root and has become essential in all areas of social life as a phenomenon that guides and monitors the transformation of society in all its various forms, bringing great changes in almost all areas and especially in the world of work and industry. Industry 4.0 refers to a fourth industrial revolution (following water/steam power, mass production and automation through IT and robotics) and introduces the concept of "cyber-physical systems" to differentiate this new evolutionary phase from the electronic automation that has gone before. The term Industry 4.0 refers to the next phase in the digitization of the manufacturing sector, driven by four disruptions: 1) the astonishing rise in data volumes, computational power, and connectivity, especially new low-power wide-area networks; 2) the emergence of analytics and business-intelligence capabilities; 3) new forms of human-machine interaction such as touch interfaces and augmented-reality systems; 4) improvements in transferring digital instructions to the physical world, such as advanced robotics and 3-D printing. One of the core elements of the fourth industrial revolution is the systematic application of IoT technologies (Internet of Things) and IoM (Internet of Me) to production processes on a global scale. The aim of the paper is primarily an analysis of what are the possible future benefits of IoT and IoM, trying to understand the effort and their opportunities for a consumer oriented business. Then to analyze the competitive advantage that companies are pursuing when they implement a business which is IoT / IoM oriented. The project research question relates to the possible extrapolation of a standardized behavioural pattern, in order to draw guidelines for companies who want to start a similar strategic management, through the direct experiences of an Italian start-up first mover group in the sectors involved in IoT and IoM revolution, defining risks, opportunities and threats. Theresearch presents two phases methodologically joinedbetween them: from a theoretical point of view it is defined the change from the Business Model towards the “ecosystem” of Business Model in the strategy IoT/IoM oriented,and from a empirical point of view the business development of some start-up companies using IoT and IoM technologies is studied, through the direct interview qualitative tool

    A New Fast Silicon Photomultiplier Photometer

    The realization of low-cost instruments with high technical performance is a goal which deserves some efforts in an epoch of fast technological developments: indeed such instruments can be easily reproduced and therefore allow to open new research programs in several Observatories. We realized a fast optical photometer based on the SiPM technology, using commercially available modules. Using low-cost components we have developed a custom electronic chain to extract the signal produced by a commercial MPPC module produced by Hamamatsu, in order to obtain sub millisecond sampling of the light curve of astronomical sources, typically pulsars. In the early February 2011 we observed the Crab Pulsar at the Cassini telescope with our prototype photometer, deriving its period, power spectrum and shape of its light curve in very good agreement with the results obtained in the past with other instruments.Comment: Accepted for Publications of the Astronomical Society of Pacific (PASP), 8 pages, 8 figure

    Limitations of Anti-Angiogenic Treatment of Tumors

    Clinical trials using anti-vascular endothelial growth factor /(VEGF) molecules induce a modest improvement in overall survival, measurable in weeks to just a few months, and tumors respond differently to these agents. In this review article, we have exposed some tumor characteristics and processes that may impair the effectiveness of anti-angiogenic approaches, including genotypic changes on endothelial cells, the vascular normalization phenomenon, and the vasculogenic mimicry. The usage of anti-angiogenic molecules leads to hypoxic tumor microenvironment which enhances tumor invasiveness. The role of tumor-infiltrating cells, including tumor associated macrophages and fibroblasts (TAMs and TAFs) in the therapeutic response to anti-angiogenic settings was also highlighted. Finally, among the new therapeutic approaches to target tumor vasculature, anti-PD-1 or anti-PD-L1 therapy sensitizing and prolonging the efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapy, have been discussed

    Although usually referred to as a structural actin-binding protein, LIM and SH3 domain-containing protein may actually be dynamically involved in the control of a wide spectrum of cellular processes, by virtue of its interaction with several molecular partners. Alongside being ubiquitously expressed in physiological conditions, LIM and SH3 domain-containing protein is overexpressed in a growing number of human cancers, in which it may actively contribute to their aggressiveness by promoting cell proliferation and migration. In view of the recent findings, implicating the protein in cancer progression, we discuss here the most relevant discoveries highlighting the role of this versatile protein in various human tumors. The correlation between LIM and SH3 domain-containing protein expression levels in cancer and the poor outcome and metastatic behavior of tumors denotes the clinical significance of this protein and hints its potential value as a new cancer prognostic or even diagnostic biomarker. This may be decisive not only to optimize existing pharmacological regimes but also to delineate novel, more efficacious therapeutic and/or preventive approaches
